10.á Auxiliary Power
Supply
A concern related to maintaining the general usability
of the lift as well as egress width is the possibility
that power to the lift may fail while the lift is
on the stairway. Statistically the risk is small,
however, if
power failures are common in the area, auxiliary power systems (battery
backup) are available. These systems are always
standing by and engage automatically if the mains
power is lost.
Generally these auxiliary power
systems consist of a separate small cabinet that contains a
12 VDC battery, an automatic charger and aná inverter that converts the battery
power to 220 VAC single phase mains power.
Battery Powered Lifts
Most lifts, like elevators, operate
on mains power that is wired directly to the drive motor and
lift control system.á In most
public buildings reliable power supply is not an issue.
Be aware that some lifts operate
just on batteries and must therefore be charged at each
landing when not in use.á These
lifts are not suitable for long stairways or continuous duty
applications due to battery capacity limitations.
